presenting...
presenting lorelai gilmore, one of the most memorable episode title. the episode wasn't that great (it was, but not the best), yet the title stuck.
okay.
so what's all these fascination on gilmore girls? wth? using your gift voucher to buy five seasons of gilmore girls? you must have been one nutball (or two nutballs) to do that! so yeah. what is it about gilmore girls?
good question. recently, i've been really affected by the fact that gilmore girls is going to end next year. you know, that marks the end of the great old shows. no more. all the old shows that i like is over.
to answer this question, i need to detour to my childhood.
i wasn't a tv watcher for once. i didn't really watch that much tv. much less than the average around for sure. well. let's see. the first american tv show that i watched (i didn't really watch anime) was some wb and disney cartoons. but well, let's skip that.
the first tv show that i considered great was F.R.I.E.N.D.S. yes, you should know that. i'm crazy about friends. to me, that's the greatest comedy every written around. presenting six crazy people. three guys, three girls. all nutballs! but they are lovely. seriously, nobody is more lovely than the six of them. i could watch them over and over again and still love them.
then there was dawson's creek. oh, i bet you've never heard of that show. i think it didn't get past it's fourth season, but i wasn't sure. the story is about this handsome guy called dawson. you know, he's really handsome and cute and all... nah, just joking! i was more interested in katie holmes than him. i didn't even remember his real name. let me check that out later. but katie holmes i remembered clearly. yes, before she appeared in those big screen movies, she was in dawson's creek. that's when i really know her. that's the character i grew accustomed to. not those action movies characters she was in. that's joey potter, her character. i still remembered clearly those two (dawson and joey) also slept together since they were five. they were such a good friends until teenhood hit them. with loves and sex all around. oh well, that's when dawson's creek began. that's the second great show.
there was hercules and xena too. oh, you must be joking! well, i am. don't get me wrong, they are great. i watched them. but well, they aren't that great. especially xena with her funny eyse.
come to the third great show. it was charmed. charmed was just wonderful and charming in the middle of all the japanese and korean dramas which were all over the tv last time (erm, under one roof anyone? tokyo love story? bleah!). not as if j and k dramas have ever left the tv. now there's this hongkong (i think) drama on tv mobile at 1015 every morning (when i am sitting down in a bus going to work) about some abalone restaurant thingy. it was quite intriguing actually.
back to prue, piper and phoebe. well, those three just have the right chemistry. my favourite (in the first few seasons) were holly marie combs (piper). now it's phoebe of course. not to mention, i was damn sad when prue actually died. felt as if someone real just died. well, after that i've got used to having paige around. it took my a few seconds to actually recall the name prue out of the backburner of my brain. there were one or two lousy seasons complete with their lousy special effects (like some castles rising from sands, wth!). but most of the seasons are great. the last few are great too. and so does the first few. the middle sucks i must say. anyway, that's the third greatest show i've ever seen.
then there was gilmore girls. how could i describe this show? fascinating! i only got to watch about one or one and a half season before i left for singapore. but. i don't know what to say. it captured me completely. this mother-daughter story is really it. it's not a comedy like friends, but it's a comedy of its own too. full with drama and everything. i could remember distinctly staying up until 10 or 11pm just to start watching an hour of gilmore girls. those were the few days i actually slept past midnight (my sleeping time last time was 10 or 1030pm). i remembered that i was upset when suddenly gilmore girls was not there for a week or two. and the mid-season break was awful. no, i didn't really know that there's actually such break. at that point in my life, i thought shows were continuous all year long. yes, i didn't know that one season only consists of 22 to 24 episodes. how stupid. what was worse, everytime there was substantial pause (more than a month), the schedule will change. and it was erratic. sometime they just shift they airday from tuesday to thursday. or to sunday! or to friday. argh! that made me miss quite a few episodes, and that made me even more mad.
when i came to singapore. i was missing all these shows. oh well. it was just not destined. but i started watching again in jc2, when i got my adsl connection (shared with a few friends) and started downloading shows. i started watching gilmore girls again (along with smallville, ah another great movie, alias, also great, and charmed), starting from the end of its fourth season. really love it. seriously. just about that time, bittorrent was just about to start its world domination. i was glad i found bt early so i could actually download all these hdtv version of gilmore girls.
and now, i have it! the first five seasons of gilmore girls. i couldn't believe it. anyway, to top it off, this is the song that greets you when you first step into the gilmore world. the first song of the pilot episode of the first season of gilmore girls. the song began right on the first few seconds of the show. and it's nice too. i can't imagine sixpence sang this song too. this song is so great! short, yet damn sweet.
There She Goes
The Las
There she goes
There she goes again
Racing thru' my brain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she blows
There she blows again
Pulsing thru' my vein
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes, there she goes again
She calls my name, pulls my train
No-one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains
There she goes
There she goes again
Chasing down my lane
And I just can't contain
This feelin' that remains

i still haven't answered the question of why i love gilmore girls. it's really hard to explain after all. i decided that i could probably only gave you those background information you read up there. other than that, i also don't know. why do i like gilmore girls? i don't know, seriously.
ah, it's been sometime now. F.R.I.E.N.D.S is over. dawson's creek was over too (it carried on until season 6 btw, not 4. i just checked.). charmed just aired its last episode two or three weeks ago. only gilmore girls left. the last one standing. oh well. i know i did say that smallville and alias are great. but they don't hold so much against the other four. did you see me writing one whole paragraph for these shows? no. there you got it. probably because i started watching these two shows in singapore. so there's no nostalgic feature.
well, next year will really be the end of all the great shows of my life (not to mention that smallville might end next season too).
i hope i won't cry then. especially on rory's graduation.
