ada apa dengan cinta?
i just watched this amazing indonesian show with two of my malaysian friends. it's called "Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?" (What's Up With Love according to The New York Times translation). anyway, according to what i've heard, this show is the greatest show ever published in indonesia. it hit their box office like nobody's business, reaching malaysia, singapore and even the states. quite amazing really.
SPOILER WARNING! summary below (include ending)
the story is about this girl called Cinta (lit. Love). this girl love poetry so much. she's also very famous in her high school. from my own perspective, she seems like a girl who tried very hard at being accepted and succeeded at that. but deep inside she was all constrained by all these outward mask that she always wore. much like me. just that nowadays, i just drop that outward mask most of the time. sigh.
well, back to the story! during a yearly poetry competition (which she always won previously), an unknown guy called Rangga won. she, obviously unhappy because she lost, read the poem over and over again. she was mesmerised by it at the end. she decided that they (she and her best friends) should interview Rangga for their school's bulletin board. however, this Rangga guy appeared to be an obnoxious loner. he told her off, which pissed her off badly. but at the same time we could see that she started to like him as well.
during the first half of the show, we saw how they fought and went out together and fought again. then, there is this guy that liked Cinta very much, he and his gang beat Rangga up one fine day. Cinta heard that Rangga was beaten up (but not by who), she visited his place. that's when Cinta found out more about Rangga and his dad. this is where the storyline showed a bit of indonesian politics in it. the script-writer obviously didn't think that the Reformasi (reformation period) was sufficiently uncorrupted and that fact kinda leak into the storyline.
the story got complicated as they got closer. Cinta lied to her friends many times over just to go out with this guy. as they both went out to a club, where she sang his winning poetry out, her best friend Alya (wow! this girl is very pretty, my friend was like so in love with her. she's also my favourite character) attempted suicide.
things went for the worse for Cinta. her best friends shunned her. she was angry with herself and told Rangga off. Alya got better and Cinta apologized to her best friends and they were back together. but her pride (and Rangga's pride) was too high for her own good. it's pretty damn obvious that she missed Rangga (and he did her), but she didn't act on it because of her pride.
at the end, she couldn't take it and spilled the bean to her friends, but it was kinda too late. they found out that Rangga, at the very moment, was going to leave the country to study in a university at New York. they rushed to airport, where Cinta managed to meet Rangga. after some exchanges and a passionate kiss, the two parted, leaving Cinta crying and Rangga with empty face. the story ended with Cinta reading a poetry written by Rangga for her, promising her the he'll return to question her love once again.
that's the story. it's a very sad story indeed. but lovely too. i couldn't help but laugh at lots of points, just to disguise my very own crying heart. pride is really a thing to avoid. but i couldn't seem to suppress my own pride. sigh. anyway, i want to dedicate this song for you. and i know you would never read this, but know that if i could turn back time and change what already happened, i would.
Denting
by Melly Goeslaw
Ada Apa Dengan Cinta soundtrack
Denting yang berbunyi dari dinding kamarku
sadarkan diriku dari lamunan panjang
tak terasa malam kini semakin larut
ku masih terjaga
Sayang kau di mana aku ingin bersama
aku butuh semu untuk tapiskan rindu
mungkinkah kau di sana merasa yang sama
seperti diriku... di malam ini
Rintik gerimis yang indah
kekasih di malam ini
kita menari dalam rindu yang indah
sepi kurasa hatiku
saat ini ku sayangku
jika kau di sini, aku tenang
sorry for the bad lyrics. i was trying to write it with my minimal knowledge or Bahasa Indonesia. hope they are correct. one day i would translate it for you.
